COURSE OVERVIEW

Whether beginner or advanced French speakers, whether in Early French Immersion, Middle French Immersion or Core French, every student will improve skills and gain confidence in French through fun hands-on activities lead by our engaging and responsive teachers. At every age and level, students embark on relatable, meaningful adventures where the fun and games make learning, speaking, reading and writing French facile!  

Les chenilles (Grades 1-3, ages 6-8) 

Through hands-on activities using Lego, playing chess, creating theatre, making art and growing food, students will learn and practice vocabulary from familiar contexts, using proper pronunciation, tenses and prepositions. They will learn to use full sentences in spoken and written form. 

Level 1 

Can recognize and use familiar words and simple phrases for concrete purposes. Can introduce themselves or someone else. Can ask and answer basic questions about home, family, surroundings, etc. Can communicate in a basic way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is ready to repeat or reformulate to help communication. 

Level 2 

Can understand isolated phrases and common expressions that relate to areas of high personal relevance (like personal or family information, shopping, immediate environment, work). Can communicate during easy or habitual tasks requiring a basic and direct information exchange on familiar subjects. Using simple words, can describe his or her surroundings and communicate Beginner 

Les cocons (Grades 4-8, ages 9-13) 

Through activities such as building robotics, learning about money matters, exploring travel, doing photography, and listening to contemporary music, students will expand French vocabulary and perfect pronunciation, will practice communication of longer texts in writing and orally, and will explore and compare how French is used in different contexts, communities and cultures. 

Grade 4 French Immersion focus 

This program is for students who have basic French skills from elementary core French classes – they can recognize and use familiar words and simple phrases, can introduce themselves or someone else, can communicate in a basic way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is ready to repeat or reformulate to help communication – and is designed to increase comfort and understanding of French language through focus on developing vocabulary and practice of French syntax.   

Level 1 

Can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar subjects in work, school, leisure activities, etc. Can manage in most situations that come up when travelling in a region where the language is spoken. Can produce a simple and cohesive text on familiar subjects or subjects of personal interest. Can narrate an event, an experience or a dream; describe a desire or goal, and outline reasons or explanations behind a project or idea. 

Level 2 

Can understand the main ideas of concrete or abstract topics in a complex text, including a technical article in the user’s area of expertise. Can communicate with a degree of spontaneity and fluency during a conversation with a native speaker, in a way that is comfortable for everyone. Can speak in a clear, detailed way on a number of subjects; express an opinion on current affairs, giving the advantages and disadvantages of the various options. 

Les papillons (Grades 9-12, ages 14-18) 

Through hands-on activities such as coding, creating comedy, filmmaking, being entrepreneurs and exploring current issues, students will learn sophisticated French vocabulary as it relates to specialized areas such as accounting, technology, art, engineering and sociology, and will communicate in complex forms in written and oral contexts. 

 Level 1 

Can understand a wide range of long and complex texts, including any subtextual or stylistic nuances. Can express him or herself freely and fluidly, without obviously fumbling for words. Can use the language effectively and fluently in a social, professional or academic context. Can speak in a clear, organized way about complex subjects, developing a well-structured argument 

Level 2 

Can effortlessly understand almost everything he or she reads or hears. Capable of a coherent summary of events or arguments from oral or written sources. Can express him or herself precisely in a spontaneous, fluent way, conveying finer shades of meaning precisely.
