Extra Ed English Reading and Writing Programs are designed for all ages, and they target a variety of needs. These programs will engage students with a variety of hands-on and collaborative activities including reading buddies, Bingo, Lego activities, Snowman (school friendly hangman), Madlibs, Grammar Games, Flash Memory games and many more. A fun points system is used to encourage participation, and nurture collaboration within groups. Students will also work in teams to solve weekly riddles/problems to help them gain points and accomplish milestones.
Early years K-3
Students will be able to identify 2-4 letter sight words, understand simple past and present tense use, and be able to listen, respond and ask simple questions regarding themselves and literary materials.
Students will build upon minimum 5 word sentences to expand them with adjectives. Students will be able to write their short sentences using provided vocabulary. They will also use simple punctuation such as; periods, commas, question marks, exclamation points, and quotation marks.
Junior Grades 4-8
Students will be able to identify 5-8 letter sight words, understand past, present and future tense use in a variety of contexts, and be able to listen and respond to questions regarding themselves and literary materials. This will include identifying multiple perspectives, context, and interpretation of materials.
Students will be able to write a paragraph of approximately 5 or more sentences using punctuation, grammar rules, synoptics & semantics are correctly used within provided parameters.
Intermediate Grades 9-12
Students will be able to write in multiple forms ranging from creative short stories to formulating a basic thesis with supporting evidence. Students will be able to structure a maximum 5 page essay in a range of topics, using advanced grammar. Students will be able to divulge the meaning of multiple texts, identify multiple perspectives and connect them to real world circumstances.
Students will be able to read and comprehend a variety of text sources, including primary and secondary sources for research purposes. Students will be able to find a variety of sources to support writing materials.
Adult classes (Ages 18+)
Section 1:Creative writing classes; short stories/essays.
Section 2:Academic writing - Thesis & Hypothesis, Essay, Research paper support, building skills for academic writing. Students will be able to conduct research, pull evidence from primary and secondary sources. Learn how to cite correctly within the subject area (MLA,APA,IEEE, Chicago, etc.)
Section 3:Business language help - Reports, infographics, presentation improvements
