New Programs beginning Fall 2020
Congratulations! You found the course that made Extra Ed what it is today.
This fun and energizing course uses money games and tournaments to help students understand key terms and instruments used for managing money and achieving long term wealth. Money Managers also makes students financially literate and money smart so they’re unlikely to fall for big advertising claims and overpay on fees.
Extra Ed offers 2 In School Programs based on the age of the students, Junior Money Managers (Grades 1-3) and Money Managers (Grades 4-12).
Junior Money Managers (Grades 1-3)
This course presents students with a fun and memorable introduction to money and the financial world that surrounds it. Major topics include:
What is money? Where it comes from (hint: it doesn’t grow on trees!)
What do things cost? What does it mean to be a consumer?
What is a bank?
What does the government do?
What is a job?
An introduction to the concepts of saving and debt
Finally, students participate in a financial tournament that has them complaining about taxes more than their parents!
This is a truly invaluable life skills course that impacts students for the long term as they learn what it takes to manage money responsibly.
Money Managers (Grades 4-12)
There are 4 Levels offered in this Program. Each Level builds upon the other.
Level 1 – This fun introduction is designed to look at budget basics covering topics from allowances to savings plans, debt, credit cards, and more. This course empowers students to look at money differently and make informed decisions.
Level 2 – Building on the Level 1 foundation, this course introduces interactive group activities and a “net worth” tournament. Students challenge each others’ beliefs around savings, chequing accounts, taxes, bills, and fees.
Level 3 – Things get exciting as students continue learning about debt paid at fixed versus variable rates while expanding their learning on savings. Registered accounts, RRSP's, TFSA’s, and RESP’s are introduced, and a financial tournament is played where students accumulate fictitious funds to invest.
Level 4 – Our savvy students are now ready to learn about investment instruments used inside registered accounts, GIC’s, Bonds, and Stocks. An app is used to run a stock trading tournament with live results. Students are empowered to manage their fictitious trading accounts.
