It is often said Writing is the window to imagination. At Extra Ed, our Creative Writing courses are designed to open windows to imagination for both writers and readers.

Our instructors, rich with writing experience, offer opportunities for writers and readers to develop their talents and deepen their passions by learning key story writing techniques, participating in interactive lessons, and creating and sharing their work.

6 Creative Writing Courses are Available:

  • Creative Writing 1 – This course is for budding creative writers. Students are encouraged to begin a daily writing practice, tapping into their imaginations, and writing their own creative stories.
  • Creative Writing 2 – A continuation of Creative Writing I, students spend more time engaging and participating in interactive lessons and sharing their works in progress. Students learn to strengthen their use of language, character, dialogue, setting and plot.
  • Creative Writing through Reading – Literature and literary techniques are examined so students can read and write like writers. Different approaches to style such as description, point of view, dialogue, character, setting, imagery, and metaphor are explored and incorporated into writing exercises.
  • Short Fiction/Creative Non-Fiction 1 – If you love short stories and want to write them, this is the course for you. No creative writing experience required! In this course you learn the building blocks of short story writing by examining published works from great authors. Students even write their own short story and have it constructively reviewed by the instructor and their classmates. New Programs beginning Fall 2020
  • Short Fiction/Creative Non-Fiction 2 – This follow-up course to Short Fiction/Creative Non Fiction 1 helps students to further develop their work and style. With emphasis placed on expanding, exploring, and perfecting writing passages, students learn how to write a fictional or non-fictional piece that resonates with readers.
  • Memories into Stories – Just do You! This online course explores the nature of memoir and related genres. Students learn how to translate their life experiences and memories into words using their own voice and style.
